Mulgrew Miller (1955-2013) was a brilliant pianist who was greatly in demand throughout his career.
After having stints with the Mercer Ellington Orchestra, Betty Carter, Woody Shaw, and Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, he worked with the Tony Williams Quintet (1986-93) in addition to having his own trio and freelancing.
For 30 years Miller (who was inspired by McCoy Tyner but developed his own voice) kept quite busy playing with the who’s who of modern jazz until a stroke ended his life.
This version of “If I Should Lose You” with bassist Ivan Tayor and drummer Rodney Green was performed on July 11, 2006 at a concert in Salzau, Germany.
The creative playing of the pianist reminds one of the major loss that the jazz world suffered with his passing.
