A rare clip of Kenton’s greatest band

Stan Kenton led many unique and powerful big bands during 1941-79.

While many versions can be cited as one’s favorite, it would be difficult to improve upon the orchestra that he led during 1952-53.

This short but swinging performance, filmed on Aug. 27, 1953 in Berlin and taken from the German film “Schlagerparade” (“Hit Parade”), has solos from trombonist Frank Rosolino, altoist Lee Konitz, tenor-saxophonist Zoot Sims, and trumpeter Conte Candoli.

The impressive lineup of musicians also includes drummer Stan Levey who really drives the band, four other trumpeters including Buddy Childers, three additional trombonists including arranger-bass trombonist Bill Russo, altoist Dave Schildkraut, arranger Bill Holman on tenor, baritonist Tony Ferina, guitarist Barry Galbraith, bassist Don Bagley, and the smiling leader on piano.
