Keyboardist and composer Josef Erich “Joe” Zawinul was born on July 7, 1932 in Vienna, Austria.

Zawinul received classical training at the Conservatory of Vienna before moving to the US upon receiving a scholarship to Berklee School of Music.

He worked with Miles Davis during the late ’60s appearing on “Bitche’s Brew” and writing the title track for the album “In a Silent Way.”

In 1970 Joe Zawinul co-founded the jazz fusion group “Weather Report” with Wayne Shorter introducing electric bass and synthesizer to the jazz world.

The band remained active until the mid-’80s when they produced their final studio album “This Is This” under contraction obligation to Columbia Records.

In his remaining years Joe recorded a few more albums as leader as well as a making a number of concert and festival appearances.

Joe Zawinul is featured during a concert performance with his short lived band “Weather Update.”
